The trio has released five albums, four of which contain jazzed-up versions of Icelandic folk songs. The album \u201cScandinavian Songs\u201d also includes music from all the Nordic countries, The Faroe Islands and Greenland. \u201cConnections\u201d came out in Canada in 2001. It has 15 songs that are all on the trio\u2019s first three CDs. This CD brings in a new sound because the Icelandic-Canadian trumpet player Richard Gillis plays with the trio.
\nThe disc was released in Iceland in 2005 as \u201cIcelandic Folk\u201d.<\/p>\n
All five albums have been critically acclaimed and have received bestseller status in Iceland.In the fall of 2010, Guitar Islancio released a Best of album, containing 14 favorites from the older albums, as well as a brand new recording of Bj\u00f6rn Thoroddsen\u2019s Tango, which was originally included on \u201cGuitar Islancio II\u201d.<\/p>\n
The CD \u201c\u00dej\u00f3\u00f0l\u00f6g \u2013 Folksongs\u201d came out in 2017. It has 14 songs from the trio\u2019s previous CDs. In addition, it has a previously unreleased version of \u201c\u00c1 Sprengisandi \u2013 \u201cRiding over the Desert\u201d by Sigvaldi Kaldal\u00f3ns. 2019 saw the publication of \u201cIcelandic Folksongs, Arranged by Guitar Islancio\u201d. It provides sheet music for 22 folksongs with chord diagrams for the guitar and piano, along with various lore about the songs. All the text in the book is in Icelandic, English, and German. A vinyl record with 12 folksongs that have all been released on the trio\u2019s CDs will come out at the start of 2022.<\/p>\n
The trio has performed alongside a wide variety of renowned international musicians, including France\u2019s violonist Didier Lockwood and guitarist Sylvain Luc; Denmark\u2019s clarinettist J\u00f8rgen Svare and violinist Kristian J\u00f8rgensen; Swedish guitarist Ulf Wakenius, saxophonist Jonas Knutsson and trombone player Nils Landgren; Belgian guitarist Philip Catherine; American guitarist Larry Coryell and Canadian trumpet player Richard Gillis \u2013 who is also featured on the album \u201cIcelandic Folk\u201d (released in Canada as \u201cConnections\u201d).<\/p>\n
At concerts, the trio\u2019s program is an entertaining mix of original material, Icelandic folk songs and jazz standards. The trio is famous for its powerful and lively performances and as such, it truly lives up to its name: the word Islancio is an Italian musical term and means with dash or with impetuousness. So playing \u201ccon islancio\u201d means playing impetuiously. The sound of the word is also undeniably reminiscent of Iceland, and so the name is both musical and \u201cIcelandic\u201d.<\/p>\n
In both 2000 and 2001, the city of Reykjav\u00edk awarded Guitar Islancio with the title of \u201cOfficial Musical Group of the City\u201d.<\/p>\n
Guitarist Th\u00f3r\u00f0ur \u00c1rnason recently filled in for Gunnar Th\u00f3r\u00f0arson, and \u00c1rnason will continue playing with the trio. Th\u00f3r\u00f0ur is a great find for the trio.
