J\u00f3nsson unterrichtet. Von 1976 bis 1978 studierte \u00de\u00f3r\u00f0ur an der Musikschule in Reykjavik und von 1984-1986 am Berklee College of Music in Boston. Er spielte bereits im jungen Alter in Musikgruppen und fiel dabei wegen seines hervorragenden Gitarrespiels auf. Unter anderem spielte er mit den Gruppen Rifsberja und Brunali\u00f0i\u00f0. Am bekanntesten wurde er jedoch mit der Gruppe Stu\u00f0menn, die oft \u201eBand aller Isl\u00e4nder\u201c genannt wird. Er war einer der Gr\u00fcnder von \u00deursaflokkurinn, die mit unterhaltsamen und originellen Arrangements das Interesse an isl\u00e4ndischen Volksliedern neu geweckt hat. Ihre CDs werden als wichtiger Bestandteil der isl\u00e4ndischen Musikkultur weiterhin bestehen. \u00de\u00f3r\u00f0ur ist seit Jahren ein beliebter Studiomusiker und hat bei vielen CDs mitgewirkt.
